Season Kick Off

We are pleased to announce that it’s that time of year again – when your weekends are full of the question: Do I ski or mountain bike?!

Some of our trails are opening THIS FRIDAY, April 5 (weather depending)!! Please respect all trail closures to preserve our precious trails.

2024 Memberships

Purchase your 2024 season membership HERE – and encourage your fellow riders, hikers, and friends to do the same. Your membership fees go towards supporting our trail network, so please take the time to support the SMBA and our efforts. You also get a 10% discount on Tires and Armour at McBike and Sport with your membership!

Mud Meter

A newly installed tool at The Bluff Trailhead will help you understand the current conditions of our trails. We’re hoping that this tool will help preserve the conditions of the trails by making it clear when to ride and when NOT to use them.

Let’s all work together to ensure we don’t go on CLOSED trails (and ask your friends not to go on them as well). By waiting until a trail opens it will
make for better trail surfaces and a more sustainable trail system in general.

If you have any questions why the SMBA are closing a trail, please do not hesitate to contact us for clarification on why we do this. We also hope
that all users of our trails will respect this tool in the future.

Merchandise

SMBA has cool new items to share with you this year, and all proceeds will go to trail maintenance. We have newly designed stickers and decals, beer koozies, coffee/tea mugs, socks, dog bandanas, T-shirts and Hoodies (Men, Women and kids’ sizes). Purchase these items to look sweet while showing your support for our trail maintenance. All swag is available at McBike and Sport, so please bring money and go have a look. Clothing will be available mid-April and beginning of May.

Trail Update:

As mentioned, we would like to open many trails THIS WEEKEND. Please only use open trails, and DO NOT remove closed signs (this is the job of trail adopters and the trail director).

“Round the Mountain” – Phase One – Alpine Trail.

SMBA has been working on a non-motorized alpine trail on Hudson Bay Mountain. The Alpine Trail has been a long time coming for the SMBA and the community. It all started 2015 with the initial brush stokes from Brian Shorter. For the past year and a bit, Seth Van Varseveld has done the heavy submissions for this trail to come to fruition. A huge Thank You to Seth for this painstaking work!

The trail will be a “Green” trail, meaning it will be fairly easy for both hiking and biking. It will be well constructed, free of obstacles, and have gentle climbs — no long, difficult hills! The trail will provide a route for people of all ages and abilities to reach the alpine meadows on Hudson Bay Mountain — perhaps for the first time. This will provide a significantly easier way for local residents and visitors to reach the alpine so that they may share its beauty and learn about its history through signage in collaboration with the Office of Wet’suwet’en

Funding for this trail was provided by the Province of BC/Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sports – Destination Development Fund in the amount of $349,563 and the grant was beautifully submitted by SMBA’s Amy Copland. Thank You Amy!

Adopt a Trail

We are always seeking more volunteers to adopt a trail. Send us an email at information@smithersmountainbike.ca for more details or to sign up for a trail for the 2024 season.

Trail adopters: Pease assess your trail when you get a chance, and report the conditions on your trail using your slack app. Thank you!!
